Axle sheared off, spokes pulled out of the rim, fender destroyed.

Rear Hub

The cog was sheared off, so we tacked it back on with the MIG welder.

Front Hub Internals

The front axle was broken (and poorly repaired) in two different spots. One of these 'repairs' failed, causing catastrophic damage to the fork, fender, hub, spokes and rim.

Tools

A job is never done until all the tools are out.

Front End

Front wheel installed after new axle, cones, spacers, spokes and peening the rim where the nipples had pulled through. Straightened the fender as good as possible.

Note the spoke wound around into the inside of the hub. The axle was sheared off on the other side

Re-spaced Front Hub

The front fork and wheel were spaced at 80mm versus the modern 100mm. So I had to re-space the new hub to 80mm by using the original locknuts on the new hub.

Wheel Parts

Ready to build the rear wheel. This is my standard setup on the bench before assembly (coffee optional). Spokes with prepped threads, bag-o-nipples, hub, rim and nipple driver (homemade in this case). 15 minutes later, wheel is built and ready for tension.

Front Wheel

Rims and spokes were pretty corroded from many years. Functional but not pretty...

Threading the Spokes

Custom length spokes are first of all cut, then the ends cleaned up on the grinding wheel, then threaded. A time consuming process. Someday I'll have the $3K Phil Wood spoke cutting machine.

Original Spoke

Check out this spoke that came out of the rear wheel. There were several of these. I guess whoever installed spokes years ago didnt't have the correct length. This is a pretty ingenious way of making a custom length spoke.
